The Garage
The Garage is a music box set of my late grandfather's favorite artists. A story of his physical and wellbeing is told throughout the set depicting his dementia, vision loss, and memory loss over time, as well as our relationship throughout that time.
The form of the box set is a backgammon board, his favorite game that I would see him playing with his friend throughout my childhood. The media is recorded on cassette tapes, staying true to how my grandfather consumed music. The story is written on three notebooks, handcrafted with a leather cover and perfect bound, with pages filled with childhood and adult memories with my grandfather.
My Daughter’s Daughter, the first cassette and notebook, tells the story of my first interaction with Arabic music in my grandfather’s garage. Who Are You, the second cassette and notebook, tells the story of growing out of childhood and the distance that comes between me and my culture, as well as the decline of my grandfather’s health, specifically the early stage of his Alzheimer’s. I Am Not In Pain, the third cassette and notebook, tells the story of the last few days of my grandfather’s life and my experience
of losing a loved one for the first time.
